Short breaks are an opportunity to recharge batteries, spend time with others or pursue a particular interest. They can also allow your child to have a change of scene, try different experiences, have fun and make friends.

Eligibility criteria Short breaks are for children or young people who: are 5-17 years old (up until the day before their 18th birthday) live in Hackney permanently. receive disability living allowance at middle rate or high rate or personal independence payments at intermediate or advance rate.

The short breaks assessment takes into account the impact of the disability and needs of family members including siblings. KIDS provide support and fun activities for siblings of disabled children.
What are short break services?
Short breaks provide a chance for disabled children and young people to spend time away from their carers, try out new things, have fun and make new friends. They can also provide families with a chance to have a break from their caring responsibilities and to do ordinary things together.
Can carers get help with holidays?
If you care for someone and need more time for yourself, you can arrange for a paid carer to help at their home. This is also called homecare. It might be regular (for example, one day a week so that you can work, study or have a day off) or for a short period, such as a week, so you can take a holiday.
What is a Carers Support Grant?
The Carer’s Support Grant is paid to carers once a year by the Department of Social Protection (DSP). It used to be called the Respite Care Grant. You can use the grant in whatever way you like. You can use it to pay for respite care if you wish, but you do not have to.

Are carers entitled to a break?
If you have been providing care (35 hours or more) for 22 of the last 26 weeks, you can still get Carer’s Allowance (CA). Therefore, you are entitled to 4 weeks break from caring in any 6 month period.
What is classed as care for carers allowance?
Carer’s Allowance is the main benefit for those who look after someone with a disability. The 35 hours of care needed to claim the benefit could be spent physically helping the person, completing practical tasks such as cooking or washing, or ‘keeping an eye’ on them to prevent harm.
What is a carer not allowed to do?
Carers should not smoke in service users’ homes. Workers must not be intoxicated or consume alcohol while on duty. Carers can’t take another person into a service user’s home. If they feel the circumstances are exceptional, they’ll need to get written permission from their manager to do so.
What is the send short break scheme?
