What is apraxia Awareness?

May 14 is Apraxia Awareness Day! Children with apraxia have difficulty speaking clearly because their brains cannot plan and coordinate the movements of their lips, tongue and jaw. Speech-language pathologists (S-LPs) are uniquely educated and trained to assess, identify and treat children with CAS.

What part of the brain causes apraxia?

Apraxia is usually caused by damage to the parietal lobes or to nerve pathways that connect these lobes to other parts of the brain, such as frontal and/or temporal lobes. These areas store memories of learned sequences of movements.

What is mild apraxia?

Mild CAS indicates that the deficit in motor planning/programming for speech is mild, resulting in difficulty learning motor movement sequences to produce words.

Can verbal dyspraxia be cured?

There is no cure for DVD/CAS, but with appropriate, intensive intervention, people with the disorder can improve significantly. DVD/CAS requires various forms of therapy which varies with the individual needs of the patient. Typically, treatment involves one-on-one therapy with a speech language pathologist (SLP).

What is childhood apraxia of speech?

Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is an uncommon speech disorder in which a child has difficulty making accurate movements when speaking. In CAS , the brain struggles to develop plans for speech movement.

Can a child with apraxia learn to talk?

First, there obviously is no “guaranteed” outcome for a child with apraxia of speech. However, many, many children can learn to speak quite well and be entirely verbal and intelligible if given early appropriate therapy and enough of it.

Is apraxia a birth defect?

This condition is present from birth, and it affects a child’s ability to form sounds and words. Children with speech apraxia often have far greater abilities to understand speech than to express themselves with spoken words.

What is the difference between apraxia and dyspraxia?
