What is the benefit of a coated Nikasil cylinder?
This coating allowed aluminium cylinders and pistons to work directly against each other with low wear and friction. Unlike other methods, including cast iron cylinder liners, Nikasil allowed very large cylinder bores with tight tolerances and thus allowed existing engine designs to be expanded easily.
What is a Nikasil coating?
NiCom (Nikasil) plating is an electro-composite coating – consisting of a nickel metal matrix with hard particulate dispersed uniformly within it. The process involves electroplating nickel in the presence of hard particulates, such as SiC, under conditions allowing the hard particulate to co-deposit with the nickel.
How long does Nikasil last?
The thing with the Nikasil plating is that despite how thin it is, it’s actually quite sturdy and hard. As long as you properly maintain your engine according to factory recommendations, it will last you for many years.
How do I know if my cylinder is Nikasil?
A sure way of knowing if you have the iron liner is to use a magnet. If it sticks to your liner, you have the original cylinders.
Can you bore a Nikasil cylinder?
Yes they can be bored out and then replated.

Can nikasil cylinders be honed?
Nikasil is to hard to actually be honed, unless you’re using a diamond hone. The only thing you’re doing when you hone a nikasil lined cylinder is deglazing it, which is a good thing. Use a ball hone, or a scotch bright pad.
